Preferred Qualifications Position Summary
This position provides strategic and visionary leadership in the design, development, and implementation of state- and district-level science assessment and instructional initiatives for the College of Education's K-12 Assessment Solutions unit. The incumbent serves as the senior content expert and strategic partner in advancing large-scale assessment programs that drive instructional improvement and data-informed decision-making. The incumbent also provides cross-disciplinary content leadership, offering expertise and backup support for mathematics assessment initiatives to ensure consistency and capacity across STEM programs.
The role is designed to expand organizational leadership capacity, with the potential to develop into a future co-director leadership position. The incumbent will direct high-impact, multi-district projects, manage and develop internal teams, support staff development, and ensure rigorous scientific integrity and alignment to standards. The position also contributes to strategic planning, client relations, cross-disciplinary coordination, innovation in assessment design, including emerging technologies and three-dimensional science standards, and the delivery of professional learning for internal and external partners.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
- Background teaching or leading curriculum development for grades 6-12 science.
- Demonstrated expertise in instructional design, curriculum alignment, and standards-based assessment development.
- Proven ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams and drive complex educational initiatives.
- Strong project management skills, including data analysis and strategic communication.
- Proven record mentoring, supervising, and managing professional staff.
- Strategic planning and program development expertise.
- Budget management and contract oversight experience.
- Effective communication and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to lead diverse teams and coordinate multiple projects with competing priorities.
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
- Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods.

- Direct and oversee science assessment design across elementary, middle, and high school programs, ensuring both content depth and pedagogical relevance.
- Serve as the lead content authority, ensuring scientific accuracy, upholding precision, rigor, adherence to assessment best practices, and alignment to standards.
- Mentor, coach, and evaluate item writers and reviewers through all phases of item and assessment development, ensuring alignment, validity, and universal design principles.
- Design, lead, and facilitate science-related professional learning for internal teams and external educators.
- Collaborate with colleagues to develop innovative, data-driven assessment approaches and instructional resources that strengthen science understanding statewide.
- Provide secondary content leadership and oversight for mathematics assessment development as needed, ensuring consistency in item quality, alignment, and project delivery across STEM disciplines.
- Lead and manage complex, multi-phase assessment and instructional development projects from concept to delivery, including blueprint design, content review, production, development timelines, and quality assurance processes.
- Lead cross-functional teams to deliver on-time, high-quality products that meet client and program objectives.
- Support budget planning, staff allocation, and client coordination for assessment and instructional projects.
- Identify and implement innovations in assessment design, including technology-enhanced item development, 3-D science task integration, and adaptive testing approaches.
- Cultivate and collaborate with district and state partners to expand K-12 Assessment Solutions' visibility, reach, and long-term impact.
- Work closely with the co-Directors to gain executive-level leadership experience in strategic planning, fiscal management, and client acquisition.
- Participate in organizational decision-making and growth planning, contributing to client expansion, visioning, and long-term planning.
- Develop leadership and management skills to ensure continuity of leadership, organizational stability, and succession readiness.
- Support professional growth and onboarding of existing and new content staff.
- Serve as a liaison between K-12 Assessment Solutions and district, state, and university stakeholders to promote program visibility and collaboration.
- Develop communication and outreach materials highlighting the impact and innovation of K-12 Assessment Solutions projects.
- Contribute to partnerships with STEM education initiatives, university programs, and professional learning networks.
