The Director of Student Health Services is a member of the Division of Student Affairs and leads and supervises the daily health services operation of the Health Services department. Reporting to the Dean of Student Affairs, the Director assumes authority, responsibility and accountability for delivery of medical services in the department. The position is a high-level officer of the executive team of individuals servicing at the College.
This unique position will require the successful incumbent to have standards typical of a Director, as well as significant medical responsibilities and oversight. The Director will be responsible for staffing all Health Services Staff assigned to the vessel during the sea term including but not limited to Corpsman, Nurse Practitioner(s) and individuals responsible for hands-on patient care. The successful incumbent will have familiarity with the Jones Act as it relates to medical and safety issues at sea. Issuing policy on foreign bodies, the Director serves on the Ship's Safety Committee and works with the senior leadership team, comprised of the Master, Chief Engineer and Chief Mate in response to an at-sea health protocol.
Description of duties is as follows:
Health Programming and Management
- Directs, develops, implements, evaluates and provides overall leadership for Health Services to include establishing and enforcing goals and procedures
- The Director of Student Health Services will manage the Health Services team and is responsible for both appointment recommendations and personnel decisions. Oversees staff nurse, part-time PA, medical assistants, student workers
- Establishes goals, policies and procedures and assessment model for Health Services and programs
- Enhances the efficiency and organization of medical filing system/EMR/Pyramid system
- Liaise with other campus departments (e.g. Regiment of Cadets, Admissions, Athletics) and off campus agencies
- Work with Dean of Student Affairs on budget development and expenditure planning; ensures Health Services is fully stocked with proper equipment and supplies
- Works collaboratively with the Health Services team to develop and execute programming concerning health and wellness issues specifically targeted to college students (e.g. diet, eating disorders, hygiene, stress, alcohol and drug issues, STDs)
- Is aware of and protects student confidentiality pertaining to health-related matters
- Oversees documentation of medical incidents and student visits
- Oversees maintenance of medical equipment and supplies
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as deemed necessary by the Dean of Student Affairs
Medical Care and Treatment
- Provide, promote, support, and integrate individual healthcare, clinical preventative services, clinical treatment for illness, patient education, and public health responsibilities
- Monitors patient progress; assesses patient needs and provide appropriate referrals
- Oversees treatment of common acute illnesses, including first aid and responds to campus emergencies
USCG Programs
- Responsible for all USCG physical examinations and assists the Licensing & Cadet Shipping Department in maintaining USCG compliance
- Identify and monitor potential USCG license disqualifying conditions.
- Attends and represents the College at USCG Merchant Mariner Medical Advisory Committee (MEDMAC) meetings, conferences, etc
- Responsible for the medical staffing on board Training Ship EMPIRE STATE VI!/Training Ship for Sea Term Training evolutions
- Be available for consultation regarding emergencies
- Onboard participation in Summer Sea Term
- Develops, directs and implements policies and procedures with regard to medical on board the EMPIRE STATE Training Ship
Job Requirements:
Requirement Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree
- CPR certification
- Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioner or Medical Doctor license
- Minimum 5 years of supervisory experience
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure
- Strong leadership qualities and conflict resolution skills
Preferred qualifications
- Experience or courses in Adolescent Medicine and an ability to work in an inter-disciplinary campus atmosphere
- Graduation from an approved medical school, completion of an internship and license to practice medicine in New York State, and at least five years of practice
- Experience in Medicat/EMR
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
Additional Information:
Classification/Salary Range: The Director of Student Health Services is a Management Confidential (M/C) position. The anticipated salary range is $105,000 and $135,000 and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The title is also inclusive of an outstanding benefits package (for more information please see the MC13-Unclassified-Benefits-at-Glance-Jan-2025.pdf ). Special Notes: Full time calendar year appointment. This is a management confidential position which serves at the pleasure of the appointing authority. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.
