Mechanical Engineer- (HVAC - Engineer) – Multiple Positions

The SCA’s Architecture and Engineering Department is responsible for development of scope, design, and construction documents for new school buildings, additions, lease conversions and renovation work of existing schools for New York City’s 1.1 million students. Our projects are intentionally and thoughtfully designed; positive impact design is at the forefront of all our projects. 

 

Our In-House studio is a multidisciplinary practice that is responsible for designing some of the largest and most complex schools in our 1,500+ school portfolio. Our other two studios manage external consultants from design inception to completion.  Our three studios are comprised of talented architects and engineers who are driven to deliver high quality custom designed, sustainable, and resilient public schools.

The HVAC – Engineers will function as a project team leader in the design of HVAC system in school buildings including preparation of scope reports and design documents. 

Responsibilities Include:

  • Provides overall engineering/architectural coordination for projects; performs and/or supervises the preparation of scope, pre- schematic, schematic, preliminary and construction documents, including reports, drawings, and specifications of HVAC Systems. 
  • Perform design review of HVAC Systems of multiple projects; performs review of CIPs and Capacity Projects.
  • Assist in preparing new design standards and procedures in reference to HVAC Systems.
  • Monitor the progress of the construction phase of the project in reference to HVAC Systems.
  • May be required to sign, seal, and file engineering drawings and documents.

Engineer A: Provide overall coordination for in-house design projects in reference to HVAC Systems. May function as a project leader to plan and coordinate work with other Engineers, Architects, other Technicians on several less complex design and construction projects, up to and including new small primary schools, partial modernizations, additions, leased space planning, and several Capital Improvement Projects (CIP).

Engineer B: May function as project leader to plan and coordinate work with other Engineers, Architects and other Technicians on several more complex design projects such as new large primary schools, small intermediate schools, special types of buildings, full modernizations, large additions, and specialized and/or numerous CIPs. May function as the HVAC leader in a department to train and develop internal staff in mechanical engineering discipline. 

Engineer C: May function as a project leader to plan, assign and direct the work of Engineers, Architects and other Technicians on multiple, highly complex, difficult design and construction projects. Acts as leader of multiple projects and/or leader of the HVAC sub-discipline as part of the project. Resolves any problems that occur. May manage and supervise the efforts of engineers, associates, and technicians. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and HVAC experience or a combination of education and experience; plus
  • Level A requires: A valid New York State license as a Professional Engineer. Current NYS registration must be maintained for the duration of employment. 
  • Level B requires: A valid New York State license as a Professional Engineer and current NYS registration must be maintained for duration of employment; and three years of full-time, paid post-licensure experience as a Professional Engineer; two years must be as a project engineer; project, team, or squad leader; or comparable level of responsibility. 
  • Level C requires: A valid New York State license as a Professional Engineer and current NYS registration must be maintained for duration of employment; and six years of full-time, paid post-licensure experience as a Professional Engineer; three years must be as a project engineer; project, team, or squad leader; or comparable level of responsibility.

Salary:

Level A salary range:       $71,693.00 - $111,775.00 annually   

Level B salary range:       $83,732.00 - $130,492.00 annually

Level C salary range:       $88,335.00 - $143,517.00 Annually
