Job Announcement
The City of Chandler Development Services Department is currently seeking qualified individuals interested in joining our team as a Senior Building Plans Examiner. The position is scheduled to work Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM, with an opportunity to work remotely one day a week, or a 9/80 schedule, allowing for one additional day off every two weeks.
Current City of Chandler employees may only hold one position and are not eligible for additional part-time or secondary positions within the City of Chandler.

The City of Chandler Development Services team, consisting of 86 positions, provides sound land use planning strategies, responsible design development standards, and high quality, safety compliant infrastructure in all areas of Development Services, including planning, GIS, building safety, development engineering, telecommunications and utility franchise, City fiber, transportation engineering, and customer service and permits.

Who we are looking for
Our new team member will have a passion for customer service, teamwork, and collaboration. We are looking for someone to perform technical evaluation and review of complex building and construction plans/design documents to ensure compliance with City development ordinances and building codes. Our reviews encompass, but are not limited to structural, architectural, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, accessibility, energy conservation, and fire suppression regulations.

Minimum qualifications
A Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a related field; and
4 years of progressively responsible experience in building plan review; and
An ICC Building Plans Examiner Certification and one additional ICC Certification upon hire, registration as Professional Engineer or Architect may substitute for the additional ICC Certification; or
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
This is a regular full-time position, subject to a 6-month probationary period. A register of qualified candidates will be active for 4 months should another position become available.
All applicants hired will be required to be fingerprinted with successful results as a condition of continued employment.

Class Summary
Performs technical evaluation and review of complex building and construction plans/design documents to ensure compliance with City development ordinances and building codes.
Essential Functions Overview

Essential Functions
Performs commercial and residential technical review of complex building and construction plans including fire life safety for compliance with City and other applicable building codes.
Participates in reviewing and issuing permits for commercial and residential buildings.
Evaluates alternate design methods and materials for compliance with the intent of the code and provides recommendations.
Communicates effectively and responds to inquiries from architects, engineers, designers, contractors, applicants, property owners, City personnel and the public on plan review, building codes, inspections, permits, occupancy, fire life safety and compliance.
Conducts and attends meetings with developers, owners, architects, engineers and stakeholders relating to plan design data, code interpretations, engineering regulations and the resolution of design problems affecting life safety.
Conducts research on new building and construction methods, materials and codes to stay current in the field; investigates the suitability of materials and methods of construction for compliance with construction codes.
Interprets requirements and restrictions relative to fire and building codes, ordinances, regulations, policies and procedures and develops alternative methods to comply with those requirements.
Stays current with the national code development organizations in updating and developing future code changes that enhance building safety and energy efficiency.
Conducts site visits.
Updates training in LEAF to meet the minimum ISO annual training requirements.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Principles, procedures, materials and standard practices of building construction; city and other applicable building and construction codes including architectural, structural, plumbing, heating, mechanical, fire safety and health among others; City zoning, development, construction, landscape and other applicable ordinances and codes; structural engineering as applied to the design of buildings and use of standard, traditional and non-traditional building materials.
Standard practices and procedures for plan, permit and license application review, evaluation and approval; read and interpret legal and property descriptions, ordinance and code documents, technical and instructional documents and building plans, blueprints and diagrams.
Relate plans, diagrams and blueprints to projects in various stages of construction and completion; perform mathematical and engineering calculations relating to the review of construction plans and blueprints; prepare oral and written reports and maintain written correspondence; operate standard office equipment including a personal computer and related software or programs.
Follow oral and written instructions and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Present a positive public image and maintain effective working relationships with other City employees, developers and the public even under difficult and sometimes adversarial circumstances.
Supervision
Work is performed under the general supervision of a designated manager. This position does not supervise others.
