What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking an Engineering Support Technologist to join our dynamic Power Sources Technology Group (PSTG). The selected candidate will work directly with other technologists and with staff members on programs within the PSTG related to power sources component production and production capability sustainment related activities supporting the nuclear deterrence mission.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Engage in hands-on production related activities supporting our nation's security (thermal batteries and other technologies).
- Support teams performing fundamental research by engaging in hands-on assembly and analysis activities
- Develop and build prototype units to support a wide range of testing.
- Engage in other hands-on work that maintains core PSTG capabilities.
- Document procedures and results, complete data analysis, and present out work to the team.
- Own and/or maintain labs and laboratory equipment.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range
$74,700 - $144,400
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require
- High school diploma plus 3 years or more of directly related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience with:
- Electromechanical components, such as batteries
- Hands-on hardware build/assembly experience
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance
Qualifications We Desire
- Secondary degree or certificate (AA or BS) in relevant STEM field, such as mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, or material science
- Excellent communication skills and a commitment to safety and safe work practices
- Familiarity with battery and other power source technologies, principles, hazards, and operating characteristics
- Welding experience (laser and/or TIG)
- Familiarity with laboratory analytical equipment and/or software (XRD, TGA, etc.)
- Detail-oriented experience with hands-on production/assembly activities
- Experience in hands-on laboratory operations and stewardship (e.g. maintenance/ownership)
- Demonstrated ability to perform complex, hazardous operations safely
- Experience with Sandia's EIS (Explosives Inventory Systems)
- Experience writing test plans and analyzing test data and preparing brief reports for staff and management
- An ability to work in a team environment with staff, technologists, and support personnel as well as take broad direction and implement technical activities without detailed guidance or oversight
- An active DOE Q clearance, or equivalent
About Our Team
The Power Sources Technology Group (PSTG) provides comprehensive capabilities in power source research, design, engineering, production, characterization, evaluation, and testing. Supporting the PSTG is a staff of more than 80 scientists, engineers, and technicians with backgrounds in chemistry, electrochemistry, metallurgy, chemical engineering, materials science, engineering, and physics.
Power Sources Production Engineering (Org. 7448) is responsible for the internal and external production of power source components to support the nuclear deterrent mission. This work includes thermal batteries, lithium primary packs, and other technologies in support of the nuclear deterrence mission at Sandia National Labs.
Posting Duration

Security Clearance
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
