Company History
Springfield, Missouri has always been blessed with a progressive and farsighted utility structure, dating from the opening of the gas works of the Springfield Gas Lighting Company in 1874. In 1945, Springfield Gas and Electric was purchased by the city, marking the birth of City Utilities. To be sure, Springfieldians have witnessed some incredible changes in the size, demography, and the diversity of their city since 1945. But through it all, City Utilities has strived to provide the best possible service at the lowest possible cost, and has made a modest contribution toward the quality of life in a truly quality city. In 1957, an agreement was negotiated and voters approved a purchase, resulting in the Springfield City Water Company officially becoming the Water Department of City Utilities.
