Company History

Draper’s mission statement quotes from the company’s articles of incorporation/charter as an educational not-for-profit corporation. On July 1, 1973, The Charles Stark Draper Laboratory, Inc., became independent of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where it had begun as a teaching laboratory in the 1930s under Prof. Draper. Known as the father of inertial navigation, Doc Draper led his laboratory in applying inertial navigation to systems from undersea to space. The company named after him continues to be dedicated to providing solutions in national security and space, while broadening the industries in which its engineers and scientists work, including commercial work in biomedical solutions, automotive and energy. Revenues at the end of Draper fiscal year 2019 totaled $625.7M.
Draper carries forward its educational mission to prepare the next generation of engineering leaders. Since 1973, the Draper Fellow Program has supported more than 1,000 graduate students, civilian and military, pursuing advanced degrees in engineering and the sciences.
