Company History

United Airlines History. United Airlines began as an air mail service in Boise, Idaho in 1926. Founded by a man named Walter Varney, the airliner was originally called Varney Airlines. The first recorded flight to transport mail was accomplished by this historic company.

•United offers more premium-cabin flat-bed seats and extra-legroom, economy-class seating than any other airline in North America
•United's industry-leading mobile app was selected as a 2015 Webby Award Honoree, and has been downloaded 29 million times
•United has installed Wi-Fi on 100 percent of domestic and international mainline aircraft, making it the first U.S. airline to complete Wi-Fi installations on its international fleet
•United features DIRECTV on more than 200 aircraft, with more live television access than any other airline in the world. United also has personal device entertainment on more than 450 aircraft, and was the first airline to offer it as an additional option to seatback entertainment
•Global Traveler magazine awarded United its Best Frequent Flyer Bonus Program, and Best Overall Frequent Flyer Program for the 13th consecutive year
