First Assistant Engineer – Immediate Opening
We are seeking a qualified First Assistant Engineer for an immediate temporary assignment aboard an oceanographic research vessel.
Assignment Details
Position: First Assistant Engineer
Start Date: As soon as possible
End Date: September 5, 2026
Ports: San Diego, California, and Newport, Oregon
Pay Rate: $58.90 per hour
Weekend Rate: Time-and-a-half at $88.35 per hour
Position Summary
The First Assistant Engineer will assist the Chief Engineer with the safe operation, maintenance, and repair of the vessel’s engineering systems. This position supports the vessel’s scientific research mission by helping ensure that all machinery and equipment remain safe, reliable, and fully operational while underway and in port.
Primary Responsibilities
Operate, maintain, and repair main propulsion and auxiliary machinery.
Assist with supervising the engine department and assigning daily maintenance duties.
Monitor engines, generators, pumps, electrical systems, and other vessel equipment.
Maintain accurate engineering logs, maintenance records, and inventory.
Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues.
Support safe fueling, bunkering, and machinery-space operations.
Follow all vessel safety procedures and regulatory requirements.
Participate in emergency drills and respond to engineering emergencies as needed.
Work closely with the Chief Engineer, vessel leadership, crew, and science party.
Minimum Qualifications
Requirements
Valid U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential with the appropriate First Assistant Engineer endorsement.
Valid USCG Medical Certificate.
Valid TWIC card.
Current STCW endorsements and required safety training.
Experience maintaining and operating marine engineering systems.
Ability to work safely and effectively in a team environment aboard a research vessel.
