Today, that legacy continues through one of the only fully integrated municipal electric utilities in Alberta, with a unique Electric Utilities Act exemption that gives the City greater local control over how electricity is generated, distributed, and delivered to the community.
As Manager, Engineering – Electric Generation, you'll lead a small, experienced, hands-on engineering team, working closely with Operations, Maintenance, and a supportive Director to guide reliability, modernization, and long-term generation strategy.
You'll help shape a diverse generation fleet that includes modern LM6000 turbines and legacy combinedcycle infrastructure, solving meaningful engineering challenges and making decisions that directly benefit residents, businesses, and local industry in Medicine Hat.
What you'll do
As the Manager of Engineering for Electric Generation, you will lead the engineering team responsible for the performance, reliability, and long-term evolution of the City's generation assets. Your work will directly influence how existing assets perform today and how our generation portfolio evolves over time.
Key responsibilities include:
Leading and developing the Electric Generation Engineering team through coaching, mentorship, and technical guidance.
Providing engineering oversight for gas turbines, steam systems, generators, and balance-of-plant equipment, including LM6000 units.
Supporting outage planning, execution, troubleshooting, and post-outage engineering analysis.
Driving improvements in reliability, availability, and operational efficiency.
Lead engineering input into capital planning, lifecycle strategies, and project management of major plant upgrades.
Evaluating legacy and modern assets and helping determine how they fit into the City's long-term generation strategy.
Owning and leading the Plant Management of Change (MOC) process.
Partnering with Operations, Maintenance, Supply Chain, and senior leadership on budgeting, modernization, and long-term planning.
Requirements
What you bring
You are a technically credible engineering leader who enjoys being close to the equipment, the people, and the decisions. You bring strong experience in power generation, ideally with gas turbines and steam systems, along with a practical, analytical approach to problem-solving and asset decision-making.
Qualifications include:
A bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering; a master's degree is considered an asset.
7+ years of directly related experience in power generation, including gas turbine experience.
5+ years in a supervisory or management capacity.
Registration as a Professional Engineer with APEGA, in good standing.
PMP designation is considered an asset.
Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's Licence.
